cleanser & care for balanced skin - over-care alarm!

balanced skin skin type. Those who don't have it would like to have it and think that nothing stands in the way of carefree skin (at least as far as skincare is concerned). Far from it, because the assumption that balanced skin is the easiest skin type to care for is just a myth. Just as straight, curly and wavy hair has its own requirements, so does the skin. And balanced does not mean that it remains balanced under all circumstances. But what is normal? In this article, I would like to explain the properties and characteristics of the balanced skin type and give you a suitable skincare routine to Moisturize your skin properly.

    What is balanced skin?

"Balanced" is the condition that the skin strives for. This skin type is generally known as "normal skin". However, we basically find all skin normal and no skin abnormal. Regardless of whether the skin has spots, is dry or has rosacea and other diseases: No skin is abnormal. So there is no such thing as normal skin, just balanced skin. To put it briefly and painlessly: balanced skin is in balance in all its functions and processes. If one of the functions gets out of balance, for example due to nutrition, environmental influences or hormonal factors, the condition can change. To repeat: the skin typecombination skin, mature, balanced and oily skin) indicates the basic tone of your skin and can even be inherited, but can change over the course of your life and situation. So, for example, if one of the aforementioned factors changes in your life, you may change from balanced to combination skin or vice versa. Care products play a major role here. On the one hand, skincare that is not tailored to your skin type can over- or understress your skin because it does not get what it actually needs to be balanced. On the other hand, with the right care for your skin, you can also bring your combination skin or oily skin back into balance so that it has the properties and characteristics of balanced skin. You can find out what these are in the next paragraph.

properties & characteristics of balanced skin

Balanced skin is characterized by a clear, fine-pored complexion that is not overly shiny. A complexion that has a healthy glow and is neither sallow nor excessively rosy. If we look at the whole thing through scientific glasses, this means in plain language: the skin's sebum production is regulated in such a way that it neither tends to produce too much sebum nor too little sebum. Your skin is therefore naturally well "greased", which keeps it supple and soft and ensures fine pores. The water balance in the skin is balanced and the reservoirs within the skin cells are well filled. To keep it that way, the skin's protective barrier must be intact. Otherwise, valuable moisture would escape through the damaged areas. However, as this protective layer can do its job unhindered when the skin is balanced, bacteria and viruses also have less of a chance of penetrating beneath the skin's surface.

As I revealed at the beginning, there are a few myths surrounding balanced skin. These include the assumption that it is totally robust. This may be true for some people, but it is an individual matter and not the rule. balanced skin can also be influenced by its environment and by what we put on our bodies. Particularly aggressive skincare products and beauty tools can actually damage the skin, making it thinner, eroding the skin's protective barrier and making it much easier for unwanted invaders to do their mischief. The result? balanced skin no longer looks so balanced. Impurities, an oily sheen or a lack of water become visible and need to be treated specifically.

Every skin is exposed to our activities and our environment and reacts individually. The aim of skincare should therefore be to support the skin in its natural functions, balance it and make it resistant to changing external influences. It is therefore all the more important to keep an eye on your skin and understand its language. Especially when it comes to balanced skin, as we tend to over-nourish it. Too much richness, too many Actives, too much cleanser, too aggressive "care"...

    balanced skin and yet impurities

However, incorrect skincare is not the only factor that can upset balanced skin . Diet, cycle phases, hormonal imbalances or even contraceptives can influence your skin and be an indication of the cause of the change in your complexion. So if you notice an increase in blemishes, dryness or oily patches on your face, the following questions could help you get to the bottom of the cause:

Are you about to get your period or are you currently having one?

Yes? If the appearance of your blemishes is linked to your menstrual cycle, you can try to make sure you use a thorough cleanser , especially in the evening, for example with a mild Cleansing Oil. You can also support your skin with our BHA peeling . Apply it 3-4 times a week after your cleanser during this phase to remove excess sebum from your pores overnight. This reduces or even prevents blemishes. Also make sure to reduce your consumption of alcohol and sugar. As your gut and skin are closely connected, the right diet will also help your skin to find balance.

Have you eaten a lot of sugar in the last few days?

Yes? Try to reduce your sugar intake and give your skin and gut a break from sweet treats. Of course, you don't have to give it up completely. Everything in moderation and every now and then you can treat yourself to a little more. The important thing is to balance things out afterwards.

Does the skin change occur after eating gluten or dairy products?

Yes? It's best to talk to your family doctor. Perhaps you have an intolerance or are particularly sensitive to certain foods.

Have you started using a new hormonal contraceptive in the last few months?

Yes? It's best to talk to your gynecologist about whether you should use an alternative product or whether another contraceptive method might be an option for you.

Have you recently stopped taking the pill?

Yes? Take a look at our blog post on the topic of blemishes after stopping the pill. There you will find helpful tips and lots of information that can help you.

To consider a possible hormonal imbalance: Am I getting my period regularly? Has my body hair changed (especially around the nipples and on my chin and upper lip)?

Yes? It's best to talk to your gynaecologist and have your hormone levels measured if necessary to find out if something is wrong. If you want to find out more about hormones and skin, I recommend our podcast with hormone coach and nutritionist Kati Siemens.

There are many reasons for changes in balanced skin or any other skin. It is therefore always important to observe yourself closely. I therefore recommend that you keep a little diary in which you record how your skin looks, which phase of your cycle you are in and which foods you have eaten in order to gain a better understanding of your body.

    Caution: Over-care for balanced skin

After all the possible causes that can affect your balanced skin , let's take a closer look at your skincare routine. What should you do if your skincare products or rituals are not doing your skin as much good as you think? Which products do we recommend for balanced skin? And how do you restore balanced skin if you have been using the wrong products or even over-caring for it?

Tip 1: Quality instead of quantity

Long INCI lists, i.e. the list of ingredients, are not a good sign. They are an indication that the product contains fillers and other substances that the skin does not really need. It's better to use fewer ingredients that are effective and do not contain any unnecessary additives. Ideally, you should find out which ingredients are difficult and should not be on your skin. For precisely this purpose, we have created our guide through the world of cosmetics developed for exactly this purpose. Or take a look at our Instagram Story highlight "Critical ingredients" for a first insight.

Tip 2: cleanser is the be-all and end-all

Stay away from brushes, rough cloths and coarse scrubs. They can irritate the skin or even cause micro-injuries through which bacteria can penetrate and cause blemishes. When exfoliating, use fruit acids instead, which gently Cleanse your pores overnight. Make sure that it does not contain any harmful surfactants. Our Cleansing Oil gently but thoroughly removes dirt and deposits without leaving a greasy film. Incidentally, it is also suitable for removing make-up. Because your skin's cleanser should be the Basis your skincare routine, we have dedicated a whole section to it. Blog post dedicated.

Tip 3: Give your skin what it needs - and no more

The full cosmetics shelf can be very tempting with all its promises. Too many different products can easily irritate and overwhelm the skin. Your skin doesn't need 3 serums, 4 creams, various masks and 4 different products to combat sudden pimples. Too much variety in your skincare routine will only confuse your skin. Get detailed advice and find out what your skin really needs. I will introduce you to our new set for balanced skin below.
